Girls Inspiring Girls: A.M.E. Zion Girls’ SHS Hosts Transformative Girl Child Education Program with Upward Motion Foundation

Introduction

Winneba, Ghana – The spirit of sisterhood, empowerment, and hope radiated across the campus of A.M.E. Zion Girls’ Senior High School as the school hosted a remarkable girl-centered educational program under the theme “Girls Inspire Girls”, organized by the Upward Motion Foundation. Held on 28th June 2025, the event brought together students, educators, role models, and advocates in a unified mission to celebrate, educate, and uplift the girl child.

This memorable event was more than a program—it was a movement. Rooted in the belief that empowered girls become powerful agents of change, the initiative aimed to inspire young women to champion one another, overcome social and academic barriers, and walk boldly into their futures.


A Day of Purpose and Passion

The event began with a moving address from Dr. Patricia Ananga, who emphasized the importance of mentorship, shared experiences, and positive peer influence in shaping the lives of young girls.

“There is no force more powerful than girls who lift each other up,” she said. “When one girl rises, she pulls another with her—and that is the essence of today’s theme: Equipping the Girl Child for a Bold Future.”


A Day of Dignity

A spirited opening prayer set the tone, followed by a welcome address from Mr. Derrick A. Amoah, the SRC Patron, who commended the Upward Motion Foundation for selecting A.M.E. Zion Girls’ SHS as a platform for such a life-changing initiative.

“There is no force more powerful than girls who lift each other up,” he echoed. “When one girl rises, she pulls another with her—that is the meaning behind the slogan: Girls Inspire Girls.”

Presence of Esteemed Guests

The event was graced by distinguished personalities whose presence underscored the importance of girl child education to national development. Notable guests included:

  • Ms. Rejoyce Agbi Akua – Cybersecurity Analyst and Entrepreneur
  • Mrs. Jahzara Agyeman – Fashion Designer
  • Dr. Patricia Nana Aba – Web Developer and Online Course Designer
  • Mrs. Violet Danso – Girl Child Education Officer, Ghana Education Service (Effutu Municipality)
  • Ms. Akorfa Ama Akoto – Tutor and Education Advocate

Led by a dynamic team from the Upward Motion Foundation and supported by the guest speakers, the program featured a rich blend of motivational talks, workshops, and real-life success stories—many delivered by women who had walked similar paths as the students.

    A heartfelt keynote address by Mrs. Jahzara Agyeman, who shared her journey from adversity to success, leaving the audience inspired by her courage and resilience.

    Students engaged in small group sessions with professionals across diverse fields including health, law, science, education, and entrepreneurship, receiving practical guidance and encouragement.
  • Peer Leadership Workshop
    An interactive session focused on building leadership skills and promoting peer-to-peer support in academics, behavior, and confidence-building.

    Students performed poetry, drama, and spoken word centered on empowerment, unity, and identity. These artistic pieces gave voice to their dreams, challenges, and collective strength.

Voices of the Future

A particularly moving moment occurred when Mrs. Violet Danso, Girl Child Education Officer, delivered a compelling speech titled “Emotional Intelligence to Train the Young Body for the Future.” Her message drew emotional responses and a standing ovation, serving as a powerful reminder of how vital emotional maturity and support systems are in the lives of young girls.

A Shared Mission

In another inspirational talk, Ms. Rejoyce Agbi Akua, the cyber security analyst, reflected on her own journey—from being the only girl in her community to complete tertiary education, to becoming a mentor and advocate for other girls. Her story illustrated the theme vividly: When girls inspire girls, a chain reaction of empowerment begins.

Students Speak

Students of A.M.E. Zion Girls’ SHS did not just listen—they engaged actively. They asked thoughtful questions, shared personal experiences, and eagerly signed up for mentorship opportunities. Alpha Lady Yetty Disu, the school’s Head Girl, expressed her appreciation:

“Today’s program reminded us that we are capable, valuable, and powerful. We are not just students—we are the future leaders, scientists, teachers, and mothers of Ghana. We thank the Upward Motion Foundation for believing in us.”

Upward Motion Foundation: Lighting the Path

The Upward Motion Foundation, a non-governmental organization committed to girls’ education and leadership development, has long been a beacon of hope for many underserved communities. Their collaboration with A.M.E. Zion Girls’ SHS reflects a shared vision of building resilient, educated, and confident young women.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Ubaldah Mensah, Foundation Director, shared:

“Today isn’t just about education—it’s about connection. When girls support and inspire each other, they become a powerful force for progress in their communities and the world.”

Looking Ahead

The program concluded with a mutual pledge between A.M.E. Zion Girls’ SHS and the Upward Motion Foundation to strengthen their partnership. Planned initiatives include the formation of a “Girls Inspire Girls” Club, regular empowerment seminars, and scholarship opportunities for high-achieving yet financially challenged girls.

Conclusion

On March 6, 2025, the A. M. E. ZION Girls Senior High School proudly represented the school and community at the 68th Independence Day Parade held at the Presbyterian School Park. This annual celebration, which honors our nation’s hard-won freedom and achievements, was marked by vibrant displays of patriotism, creativity, and unity. The students of A. M. E. ZION Girls Senior High School began their preparations weeks in advance with rehearsals that included marching drills, and artistic expressions of national pride. Under the guidance of dedicated teachers and staff, the girls committed themselves to excellence in every aspect, aiming to showcase their love for their country and the values of the A. M. E. ZION community. 

The Parade Experience

The event kicked off with various schools and organizations from the Effutu Municipality gathering at Presbyterian School Park, creating a tapestry of colorful floats, traditional music, and cultural exhibitions. The atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement as students, teachers, and community members came together to celebrate the spirit of independence. A. M. E. ZION Girls Senior High School’s contingent consisted of 30 enthusiastic students, with 4 teachers all clad in vibrant school uniforms adorned with red, yellow, and green – colors that reflect our national identity. The students marched proudly, demonstrating synchronized movements and perfect timing, which received loud cheers from the crowd. In addition to the marching segment, the school’s display featured a thematic float that depicted the significance of independence and the role of young women in nation-building. This float was especially designed by the students under the mentorship of art and sports teachers and highlighted key historical figures and milestones in our country’s journey to freedom.

The school community extended their heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers, and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event. Special recognition was given to the school’s administration for their unwavering support and encouragement, which motivated the students throughout the preparation process.

The 68th Independence Day Parade was not only an occasion to celebrate Ghana’s heritage but also an opportunity for the students of A. M. E. ZION Girls Senior High School to showcase their talents, values, and commitment to their country. The experience fostered a sense of pride and belonging, reinforcing the idea that the spirit of independence is alive in the hearts of our youth. As we look forward to future events, the A. M. E. PARENTS-TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (PTA) MEETING _1ST FEBRUARY 2025

A PTA meeting was held on the 1st February 2025 at the V.D Mensah Block of A. M. E Zion Girls, where several important agendas were discussed. The meeting was attended by a large number of parents, teachers, and school administrators as well as PTA Executives.

One of the main agendas discussed at the meeting was academics where the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were revealed, and it was noted that the school had achieved excellent results with a high percentage of students passing with flying colors. The parents were pleased with the academic performance of the students and praised the teachers for their hard work and dedication.

Another important agenda discussed at the meeting was the registration of the 2025 WASSCE. Parents were informed about the registration process and given details about the deadlines and requirements for registration. The Assistant Headmaster Academics echoed that though WAEC has not release official amount for payment, parent are to use last year’s amount as a bench-mark in order for them to have a fair idea about how much this year’s own will amount to. It was emphasized by the Assistant Headmaster Academics Mr. Godfrey Mensah, that all students must register for the exam on time to avoid any last-minute issues.

Discipline was also a key agenda at the meeting. The importance of maintaining discipline both in school and at home was stressed, and parents were encouraged to monitor their children’s behavior and ensure that they adhere to the school rules and regulations. It was noted that students who display good behavior and discipline are more likely to succeed academically.

The issue of payment of school fees was also discussed at the meeting. Parents were reminded about the importance of paying school fees on time and the consequences of late payment. It was noted that the school relies on school fees to provide quality education and resources for the students, and parents were urged to prioritize the payment of fees.

Another important agenda discussed at the meeting was the signing of bonds for Form 3 students. Parents were required to sign bonds agreeing to support their children in their final year of secondary school and ensure that they focus on their studies and achieve good results in the WASSCE. It was emphasized that parent support is crucial for the academic success of students.

Lastly, the participation in extra-curricular activities in the school was also discussed. Parents were encouraged to support their children in participating in various activities such as sports, clubs, and cultural events. It was noted that extra-curricular activities play a crucial role in the holistic development of students and help them to build important skills such as teamwork, leadership, and time management.

Overall, the PTA meeting was a success with productive discussions on important agendas such as academics, discipline, payment of school fees, signing of bonds for Form 3’s, and participation in extra-curricular activities. The meeting served as a platform for parents, teachers, and school administrators to collaborate and work together towards the academic success and overall well-being of the students at A. M. E Zion Girls.

COMMISIONING OF V.D KWESI MENSAH SIX UNITS BUILDING

On November 30, 2024, the Member of Parliament for Effutu Municipality, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, commissioned a six-unit block, which was named the V. D. Kwesi Mensah Block. The block was constructed to serve as a science laboratory, ICT laboratory, library, and classrooms for the benefit of students at A.M.E. Zion Girls’ senior high school.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by a number of dignitaries, including the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Director of Education, members of the Effutu Municipal Assembly, representatives from the Ministry of Education, teachers, students, and members of the community. The ceremony began with a procession into the newly constructed block, followed by the unveiling of the plaque bearing the name of V. D. Kwesi Mensah, a prominent figure and teacher in the Effutu Municipality who had contributed significantly to the development of education in the area.

In his speech at the ceremony, Hon. Afenyo-Markin highlighted the importance of investing in education and infrastructure to improve the quality of education in the municipality. He emphasised the need for students to have access to modern facilities such as science laboratories and ICT labs in order to enhance their learning experience and prepare them for the demands of the 21st century. 

Hon. Alex said he visited the A.M.E. Zion church at trauma in the year 2012 .Some needs of the school were brought  before him by Rve.Godfred N. Zomelo the founder of A.M.E. Zion Girls. He also said the school needs support in their class rooms and other facilities and he is going to help soon.He then thaked the teachers for their support and traning the student.

Hon.Alex made us know that he was motivated by a man named Teacher Kwasi Mensah who was a teacher and also a traner for spporting activities.Teacher Kwasi Mensah was also an assembly member for Effutu Senya constituency and he benefited from him.He realy liked the man due to his hardwork and contribution to other works.

After his speech,  he unveiled the new block and then cuted the ribbons. The building was named after his motivator HON .VD.KWASI MENSAH BLOCK AKA TEACHER KWASI MENSAH.

A poetry was recited in a form of vote of thanks by Miss Sandra Abgeko which made Hon Alex Markin excited and eulogised her.

The V. D. Kwesi Mensah Block consists of six rooms, with each room dedicated to a specific purpose. The ground floor, which has three rooms, houses the science laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to facilitate practical learning and experimentation in the sciences. The second room is home to the ICT laboratory, which is equipped with computers, internet connectivity, and other resources to help students develop their digital literacy skills. The third room on the ground floor serves as a library and classrooms, providing students with a quiet and conducive environment for study and research.

The construction of the V. D. Kwesi Mensah Block was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Member of Parliament, the Effutu Municipal Assembly. The project was completed within the stipulated time frame of 8 years, thanks to the efficient coordination and management of resources by the project team.

The commissioning of the V. D. Kwesi Mensah Block is a significant milestone in the efforts to improve the quality of education in the Effutu Municipality and the A.M.E.. Zion Girls’ SHS. The facility will benefit generations of students by providing them with access to modern and well-equipped facilities that will enhance their learning experience and prepare them for a successful future. The Member of Parliament and all those involved in the project are commended for their commitment to education and their dedication to the development of the school. The management, together with the high hierarchy of the A.M.E Zion Church, also wish to express their profound gratitude to the Honourable menber and wish him with long life and prosperity
